I’m a hopeless sucker for a catchy pop tune. So, if you’ve had the radio on for more than an hour anytime recently there’s a really, really, really good chance that you have been infected with the same earworm as I have.
But everybody’s like crystal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash.
We don’t care, we aren’t caught up in your love affair…
…And we’ll never be royals (royals)…
The first time I heard it I looked on my local Austin radio station’s website to find out what it was. After clicking around a bit I landed on Lorde’s youtube video and saw that she is really young, like, really, REALLY young, 16 years young, in fact. I also learned that as of August 12th 2013 she became the first female to top Billboard’s alternative charts in 17 years. That’s right, in her lifetime another woman has not done what she has.
Maybe it’s all this back-to-school dorm talk, but this got me thinking about what a teenage pop star’s bedroom might look like (aside from the explosion of clothing, shoes and electronics chargers). In her song, Lorde says she craves a “different kind of lux” than the flashy materialism so lauded in some music, so have a look and see what we imagine a room might look like for an edgy, talented, observant young lady on the rise.
